Places to Eat in Kennett Square: A Local's Guide to the Best Restaurants

One of the first questions buyers ask when they visit Kennett Square is where to eat. It is a fair question, because for a town of this size the food here is unusually good. State Street alone gives you coffee, Greek fusion, pizza, fine dining and taquerias inside a few walkable blocks, and the mushroom capital reputation means local kitchens cook with produce grown a mile away. Here is the guide Nate gives clients on their first tour of town.

Cafe Emis: coffee, breakfast and Greek fusion downtown

Cafe Emis sits right in the middle of downtown Kennett Square and is the spot Nate sends clients to first. Specialty coffee and espresso, fresh pastries, bagels and breakfast sandwiches in the morning, then Greek fusion through the afternoon: gyros, chicken souvlaki platters, Mediterranean bowls, savory leek and cheese pies, and Greek yogurt parfaits. There are sidewalk tables out front, which makes it the easiest place in town to sit for twenty minutes and watch State Street go by.

It is also a genuinely useful meeting spot. If you are touring homes in the Borough, starting at Cafe Emis and walking from there tells you more about the neighborhood than any listing photo can. Menu and hours are at cafeemis.com.

Trattoria La Tavola: Italian dinner on State Street

Trattoria La Tavola sits at 125 to 127 East State Street, a modern Italian kitchen with arched doors, string lights and a row of sidewalk tables that fill up the second the weather turns. Handmade pasta, wood fired flavors, Italian classics done carefully, and a room that works just as well for a date as for a family dinner after a showing.

It is the address Nate gives buyers who ask where to take out of town family. Reservations, hours and the current menu are at trattorialatavolakennett.com.

The Naked Olive: scratch kitchen, espresso and cocktails

The Naked Olive is the Borough's easy all day stop: a bright, plant filled room serving scratch made plates, real espresso, craft cocktails and a lunch crowd that mixes contractors, shop owners and people who just walked off State Street. Fresh and simple is the whole idea, and it shows on the plate.

It is the kind of place that turns into a weekly habit fast, and it is a normal stop on Nate's downtown tour between home showings. Menu, specials and hours are at thenakedolivepa.com.

State Street: dinner without driving

The historic blocks of State Street are the heart of the dining scene. You will find sit down restaurants, wood fired pizza, a brewpub or two, wine and cocktail rooms, and dessert stops, most of them inside a five minute walk of each other. Buyers who choose a Borough twin or Victorian almost always mention this first: they can park the car on Friday and not touch it again until Monday.

Mexican food and taquerias

Kennett Square's mushroom industry brought generations of families here from Mexico, and the town's Mexican restaurants, taquerias and groceries are a big part of why locals eat out so often. Tacos, tortas, birria, fresh salsas and house made tortillas are easy to find here, at prices that still feel like a small town. Ask three neighbors for their favorite and you will get three different answers, which is exactly the point.

Brunch and coffee mornings

Weekend mornings in Kennett Square run on coffee. Between Cafe Emis and the other downtown cafes and bakeries, you can get espresso, pastries and a full breakfast plate without leaving the Borough. Combine it with the Kennett Square Farmers Market in season and Saturday morning becomes the reason a lot of buyers pick this town over a subdivision twenty minutes away.

Breweries, taprooms and wine

Between the Borough and the surrounding townships you have craft breweries, taprooms and Brandywine Valley wineries within a short drive, including stops along the Route 1 and Route 82 corridors toward Chadds Ford and Unionville. It is a normal Saturday here to walk to dinner downtown and drive fifteen minutes out to a winery the next afternoon.

Family friendly and quick weeknight options

For families, the mix matters: pizza, sandwiches, bowls, ice cream and takeout that is genuinely fast. Cafe Emis covers a lot of that ground on its own with bowls, gyros, salads, soups and a kids menu, and downtown adds pizza counters and casual spots that will have you in and out in half an hour on a school night.

Eating near Longwood Gardens

If you are hosting visitors, the usual day is Longwood Gardens in the afternoon and dinner in Kennett Square after. The Borough is about five minutes from Longwood's gate, which is why so many visitors end up eating here, and why a fair number of them come back later asking about houses.

Festival food: Mushroom Festival and beyond

The Kennett Square Mushroom Festival every September turns State Street into an outdoor kitchen: fried mushrooms, mushroom soup, portabella sandwiches and every local restaurant running a stand. Between that, the holiday events and the summer sidewalk sales, the downtown food scene spills into the street several times a year.

What a walkable food scene does for home values

This is not just a fun list. Walkability to restaurants and coffee is one of the most consistent value drivers in the 19348 market. Homes within a few blocks of State Street draw a wider buyer pool, hold value better in slower markets and rent more easily than comparable homes further out. When Nate prices a Borough home, proximity to downtown dining is part of the calculation, not a footnote.

Want the walking tour in person?

Nate and his mom Megan do this tour constantly with buyers moving to Kennett Square: coffee downtown, a loop through the Borough streets, and an honest read on what each block is worth. If you are thinking about buying here, reach out and they will build the day around the neighborhoods you are curious about.
